To Nelson Mandela, courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. One can be brave not when he doesn't feel fear but when you conquer or get victory over your fear.
Unbroken is a sculpture installation which illustrates the resilience of fighting over once inner fear through struggle with the inner spirit. From the process of carefully hand carved wood is a work that shows a figure trying to rescue its reflection from a trapped brick wall. The wall serves as a portal/barrier of fear which needs to be dismantled in order to embrace your courage. The work is installed with some of the bricks spread on the floor due to the mimicking of the pull from the opposite body.
Working with the theme of courage, I imagined myself as a centre of reflection by relating the subject of the project to our human struggle in life. Life in itself poses a lot of challenges which become an obstacle that discourages one’s dream or progress. The working process became a testament to the theme of the project due to the toughness of the wood (Azobe) which made the carving process a challenge.
This project recalls the moment of my time at perfocraZe International Artists Residency (pIAR), tapping back into the past and life experience of developing as a young artist. A place that plays a vital role in my artistic practice and social life. Where I established myself as an artist and a home that opened the door to my artistic career. Not to forget the spirit and commitment involved in working with the team of the space.
The work is a combination of sculpture installation and audio which is activated through movement and interaction with the work. A sound piece that tells a poetic story of my personal experience in pIAR. Fragmented into seven different human heads buried in the ground, each of which is an embodiment of part of the shared experiences and stories. The work is activated by movement which triggers the sound from the sculpture head and at the same time creating a feeling of being involved in conversation with the heads.
